LONG RUN with Reed. We ran from Reeds house in AF to the Murdock trail and headed south until we hit 10m and then headed back. No wind! I reluctantly decided to throw in some marathon pace effort. Reed and I did the first mile together and I eased into my pace. Ended up with 7 miles on very gentle rollers coming north on Murdock. I then, Ran a half mile back to catch up with Reed and then finished it out to his house. 

Splits: 5:44, 5:32, 5:33, 5:32, 5:34, 5:35, 5:31 (5:35 avg)

I felt surprisingly good. Highlight of the run was the fresh maple bar from Daylight Donuts that Reed's wife kindly offered after we got back.

First race of the season and my first in 5 months. It was a good indicator. 

Got up at 3:45 to meet Fritz at 4:40 in Sugarhouse. We got our numbers and got to the starting line by 6:30. ~2 mile warm up with Fritz, Riley and Dave. It was around 35 degrees at the start. Chilly but we knew it would get warm when the sun hit. 

I ran the first 2 miles with Riley, trailing Fritz and an unknown (5:20, 5:24). After 2 Riley picked it up a bit and I followed for a couple miles (5:11, 5:14). We passed Fritz and the other guy around 2. I expected Fritz to join the party but found out later he wasn't feeling well. The next 4 miles were uneventful. I slowly watched Riley pull away but I was feeling fine and didn't want to push it knowing the last 5 would be rolling hills (5:19, 5:15, 5:18, 5:26).  

After 8 miles they made us get off the road and onto a paved trail. It was constant rolling hills, short and steep, for the next 4 miles. The rollers chewed me up and spit me out. (5:30, 5:30, 5:40, 5:33). Last 1/2 mile was flat and I was able to get back to pace but I was pretty beat (5:34, :41)

I Cooled down for 3 with Riley, Fritz and Dave on some trails around the lake and then another 3 with just Fritz and I.  

Riley and Dave had good come back races. On a good day, Fritz could have run the race twice at the pace I ran it once...he'll be deadly with a good taper come Boston.

Provo Canyon long run with Ty, Bill and their gang. Started early to get back for the Easter Egg hunt with the kiddies. 

5 miles up the canyon.

7 mile tempo. 4.5 down canyon, 2.5 uphill/flat. Splits: 5:20, 5:20, 5:16, 5:24, 5:31, 5:34, 5:31 (5:25 avg). 

I was originally planning on 8 but my calf started to tighten up a little at 6.5 so I cut it off at 7.

Fritz suggested I do this one after Striders Half. I knew I didn't have the training to run a great time (for me) but I decided last minute to give it a go.

I caravanned up to the finish line with Ty and some of the other Utah Race Pacers at 5:00am. We got on Trax to get to the starting line and got up there at 6:40. I didn't have time for much other than getting my racing shoes on and jogging to the starting line. 

I was surprised to find I didn't know many people at the starting line. I recognized Patrick Smyth and was grateful I wouldn't be racing him!

I ran the first part of the race with Chris Lundberg who was racing the half. I took it easy up the first few hills and just tried to stay relaxed through the declines down to the Capitol. My stomach was not happy and I was regretting the bowl of cereal I had 2 hours prior.

The full course splits off at mile 9 and we start heading uphill towards Sugar House park. I slowed down a bit up the hills and saw my first splits above 6:00, hoping they'd be my last. I caught a glimpse of Daniel and Noah during the out-and-back in Sugar house. They were about 1 minute behind. 

I crossed 13.1 at 1:14:52, about exactly where I wanted to be. I was feeling good and tried to stick with that pace.

13-18 is all rolling hills but my average was about 5:40 and I was still feeling good. 19 and 20 are more uphill and I started to feel it. 21 and 22 are flat and down and they went well.

23-26 are mostly flat. At 24.5 my left calf started to cramp. Despite feeling decent I was forced to slow down to prevent the cramp. The rest of the race was a balance between pace and calf cramp. 

The last .2 were a mix. I was in the lead and getting a lot of fanfare but my calf was on the verge and I had to slow down to around 8 min pace and run kind of dramatically on my heels! Thankfully I crossed the finish line before it went completely. 

After a few short, awkward interviews, and the awards ceremony, I headed home.

I am glad I did it! Despite the kind-of-disastrous race, it was fun to win and all in all a great experience.

I took water at nearly every water stop. I took a Roctane Gu at the start, 7 and 14. I really should have taken another at 19 or so but my stomach was upset the whole race and I didn't want to push it. It's possible I could have avoided the whole cramping thing with better in-race nutrition.

Ran up to South Fork from Palisades with Scott, just in time for the start of the Provo City Half.

Joined Riley for the first 1.5 miles and then backed it off to a more manageable pace. Felt good for 4 and then started to feel that deep fatigue. Darn marathons! Went 2 more and then shut things down.

Met Matt, Scott and Zak for a 6 mile warm up to the tempo loop where I reluctantly sent them on their way and got down to business.

There was a slight north-west headwind but otherwise perfect conditions. I felt a little sluggish, probably residual from Wednesday's system shock. 7 slow miles back home.

UVHM

I had an aggressive goal of 1:09 range today. I knew it would be a stretch but I thought there was a chance. 

I met up with Riley, Brett and Taylor at the starting line. Taylor and I had similar goals and decided to start out together and take turns leading. The first 3 miles are net even. We were right on pace (5:17, 5:17, 5:25) for the grade but I could tell after 3 miles that the effort was too high. I thought about backing off but decided to go for broke; what have I got to loose? 

The next 4 miles are the fastest and they felt good (5:13, 5:05, 5:13, 5:17). At this point it becomes a more gradual downhill and I started to feel a little lactate accumulation. 8 & 9 (5:19: 5:25) were still ok but by the end of 9 I was quickly moving into "hold on for dear life" mode.  Scott was on the course at this point and ran with me for a couple miles. Benjamin passed me around 10 and I wished him well with his sub 1:10 goal. He just missed it.

The next 4 are were not very fun. I was out of gas by the little hill at 10 and couldn't get back to pace the rest of the race.  (5:30, 5:41, 5:33, 5:38, :45). I was fighting off thoughts like, "remind me why do I do this again?" 

I was clearly not fit enough to run that time and I paid for it the last few miles. It was worth it though. How can you know how much is there unless you lay it all out?

Lots of good performances and a well organized race. I'll back next year!

AF Canyon Half

I spent the night at a cabin of a friend up in the canyon, about a mile from the starting line. So nice to wake up at 5:30 to the sound of the busses coming up the canyon knowing I wasn't on them!

Pre race nutrition included a couple handfulls of dried cranberries and a gatorade. I jogged 1.5 miles for a warm up and did a few strides. I was chatting with Brett at about 5:56, thinking I had a few minutes before the start, when the announcer said: "GO". We weren't even on the line! We sprinted out ahead of the crowed and got started. 

My plan was to take the canyon conservatively and try and have some gas at the end. I was going into the race on a full load and was feeling a little heavy. 

Brett and a guy from Montana took the first mile out in 4:30! I was just under 5. I ran by effort down the canyon. Averaged around 5:05. Scott met me at mile 7 and we ran together for 4 miles, very nice to have company during the toughest part of the race.

I was planning on being around 5:05 average at mile 9, when the steep stuff was over and then try and hang on for the rest. I came through at 5:07 pace. So, pretty close. I felt good throughout and was able to keep a decent pace the rest of the race.

Came out just under 1:08, which is a big PR, even though it's about as aided as you can get.

Cooled down 4 miles with Scott and Brett and enjoyed the french toast breakfast with Brett and his family. Very glad I did this one.

I went out easy, for the grade. I could tell after 1/2 mile that there was some lingering fatigue. I tried to ignore it and just keep going. After 3.5 miles I knew I was in trouble. After 4.5 I was done. I mentally gave up and jogged in.

It was a disappointing race. I thought I was ready for a good one. Fun to see some great performances by some good friends. Next time...

Another Hobble Creek Half in the books. I had an OK race. I warmed up 2 miles with Scott. 

We took it out conservatively (for the grade). First 6 miles averaging around 5:10. The pace felt good on the legs but my cardio and breathing were way out of wack, felt like a 5k! Not sure what was going on. 

I let Scott go after 7 and battled being out of breath the rest of the race. Weird! I didn't have anyone too close on my tail so once Scott got out of range I lost focus a little and slowed down. Last half average was probably closer to 5:30. 

Hobble Creek Half is one of those "must do" races! Runner's Corner puts on a great event.

VERY LONG RUN

I have a funeral this weekend in Boise so I had to get my long run done today. We were planning on joining Iain Hunter and some of the BYU guys for this workout on Saturday so I had a go at it solo this morning.

I did it backwards, from most years, starting at a park in Highland and going to the Soccer Park in Orem on Murdock and back. It's mostly flat.

It went well, I felt great the whole way, even the last 4, which were a bit of a battle last year.

I Averaged 5:59 and was within 5 seconds of 6:00 for every mile. I stopped at 10, 15 and 20 for water (~1 minute) and took a Gu at 10 and 20.
